Another post, another canceled television series. Sometimes it feels like every time I emotionally attach myself to a TV series, it’s just doomed.
A to Z’s cancelation hasn’t hit me nearly as hard as Selfie’s but I’m still really sad to see this show go up to TV show heaven.
A TO Z – WELL, MORE LIKE A TO M
A TO Z
Cast: Ben Feldman, Cristin Milioti, Henry Zebrowski, Lenora Crichlow
Created by: Ben Queen
Premise: A chronicle of Andrew and Zelda’s relationship, which lasts for eight months, three weeks, five days, and one hour.
A to Z was good old romcom fluff. There was nothing particularly remarkable about the show and you know what? I was completely fine with that because sometimes all I want is a cliche love story. For half an hour, the show was easy and comfortable viewing to distract me from life.
So, here’s the love story of Andrew and Zelda. Andrew is the sweet romantic who believes in meeting ‘the one’ and having happy endings. He even works on pairing people together at his online dating website because he wants everyone to enjoy happy relationships.
Andrew also believes in love at first sight when he sees Zelda.
Zelda is, of course, a lot of less idealistic. After a childhood with a unreliable hippie mom, Zelda is practical and guarded. She doesn’t like forming emotional attachments in fear of getting hurt.
All these cliche romcom tropes are terribly familiar aren’t they? I’ve seen all of these tropes play out countless times before but while watching A to Z, I wasn’t bored of seeing yet another classic romcom story..
The show had a charm to it. A to Z was aware it was only lighthearted and fun show so it just went with it. Ben Feldman and Cristin Milioti worked extremely well together and the rest of the cast were amusing to watch.
I remain wary of Lenora Crichlow’s place on the show though. After a brilliant performance on the UK show, Being Human, Lenora deserves better than Stephie who’s regulated to being the (black) romcom best friend. I really hope her next job is better. I also didn’t like how the show had one token Indian character and then one Asian one as a pair of computer technicians. Not great representation for the POC as they serve as the secondary sidekicks on the show but thankfully, no racial jokes.
I understand why A to Z never achieved much success or great ratings. Like I said, it’s not really outstanding in any way. But I was still sad to hear about its cancelation. I mean, they could have at least finished the alphabet that represented the different stages of Andrew and Zelda’s relationship. I imagine the couple having a sweet happy ending and I’m disappointed I won’t be able to see it.
I’m definitely going to miss this show. I hate being forced to say goodbye to another of my weekly doses of romcom fun because all these shows are ending.
